Fostering Better Communications at home.

With many jobs and professions going on line, family dynamics have changed. Typically, each parent is working in separate rooms which are now their offices. And if they have children, they are also in their own separate space or room, which is now their classroom.

In this scenario, all family members are in their separate spaces, but in the same home. Indoors, without commute.

The new challenge is, not to feel trapped like co prisoners and be at loggerheads, but to live harmoniously as a loving family.

The key is to exchange effective, affectionate, harmony building communication. Both verbal and nonverbal.

Selection of the right words and tone are essential in the verbal communication.

Whereas, most of us are careful with words, understanding that silence is equally important, is essential.

Research reveals that over 90% of our communication is non verbal. Therefore a lot of importance has to be placed when family members are silent. Silence can communicate mood swings, emotions, pent up feelings. Thoughts are also communicated via telepathy, silently.

Silence can be very heavy emotionally. Specially when it is a means to avoid arguments. This kind of silence can make family members unhappy with each other and promote discontent.

Silence can also be calm and happy.
Example: A family silently enjoying a TV program together at the end of a tiring but rewarding day.

Just as happy communication can bring family members together, happy and content silence can bond a family together as well.

Text messaging is an important communication tool. Children have to be taught that texting is devoid of emotions. Dialogue between members is to encouraged.

And of course a new challenge in communication is here to stay. Emojis! Ha!
