People who Emotionally eat, reach out for food to suppress and soothe a negative feeling.
Common reasons for Emotional eating are, stress and worries. These may relate to health, finance, family or relationship issues.
Both sexes are prone to Emotional eating, but it seems more common in women than in men. Not only is Emotional eating an Emotional issue, it can also result in diabetes, blood pressure and adds to fatigue.
Simply stated, a feeling of emptiness or a feeling of inner void, is filled by food to create a feeling of fullness. Strangely enough in this behaviour one is lying to oneself.
The big question is, how can we get out of this habit?
Acceptance that one has a problem of Emotional eating is the first step. Being prepared to get out of the habit is the second step.
The thought that I am stronger than the habit is important. The feeling that if I can get into a habit, I can get out of the habit as well, helps to release oneself of feeling weak and helpless.
Suggestions to get out of the habit of eating Emotionally:
1. Purchase and stock only healthy snacks (not junk foods or sugary snacks).
2. Go to the root of your Emotional void and try to fix it.
Example: If you are lonely, try to make friends. Food is not the answer.
3. Fight boredom. This is a common cause for Emotional eating. Being busy takes the mind away from food.
4. Avoid eating when experiencing fatigue. It makes one tend to eat wrongly, both in quality and quantity.
5. Reduce portions and journal your food intake.
6. Accept you have a problem and take help.
